Iris’ CVS Birthday Party

About a month ago I asked Iris what kind of theme she wanted for her fourth birthday party… Frozen, Hello Kitty, Star Wars, etc. Her answer? CVS. Yes, as in the second largest pharmacy chain, just behind Walgreens. If you follow me on Instagram you are probably well aware of her love for the store. What you might not know is why the heck our kid loves it so much. Let’s take a look back, shall we?

Here’s a video of Iris literally in tears, crying for her favorite store.

Iris loves CVS. Like, really loves it.

It all started nearly two years ago when construction began on our city’s very first CVS Pharmacy. The site happens to be directly on our path to Iris’ school, so we drive past the location at least twice a day. Being that she was only three when it opened, she watched the progress of the structure being built for nearly half of her life, so naturally it was a big deal when the store finally opened. When Iris first got to step inside the brand new CVS, she was not disappointed. She discovered all the snacks, drinks, toys, chap-stick, and band-aids that her little heart could ever desire.

The store has been open for nearly a year now and stopping in to pick up a sweet treat or a strawberry milk is at least a weekly occurrence for us. There are tears when we drive by and don’t stop, and there are cheers when we do. This girl’s love for CVS is pure and true – so loyal that I recently asked Iris where she’d rather go – CVS or Disneyworld. Her response? “CVS and Disneyworld.” Don’t you dare make a girl choose.

So when your kid puts CVS on the same level as Disneyworld, you embrace it. When they ask for a CVS birthday party, you throw it. One day it won’t be so simple to make her happy, so for now I take her to CVS when we have a few extra minutes to spare and try my best to make her birthday party special, as tricky as it may be (after all, there are no Pinterest boards for this, folks).

But when CVS headquarters heard about Iris’ party, they sent us tons of snacks, favors, and party supplies to celebrate. How cool is that? And when we told the local store manager about what kind of party we were having, he was so sweet to donate some CVS-brand water bottles to add to the goodie bags. Not to mention that her year was MADE when they flashed a big “Happy Birthday” message to Iris up on the big sign out front.

To celebrate CVS style, we gathered at our favorite local park with some of our favorite people. Here are a few photos from our day.

Party prep!

Birthday Girl

Best thing ever.

Party time!

Gotta keep the adults entertained.

Don’t worry. These were Tic Tac favors for the grown-ups only!

Gold Emblem™ snacks (a CVS exclusive) sent directly from their headquarters!

Goodie bags!

A big thank you to all of our friends who celebrated and happily played along (apparently so many people bought her a birthday gift from our local CVS that all the employees knew about the party). And thank you to CVS who helped make Iris’ fourth birthday so special. By the way, this is in no way sponsored by CVS. Just 100% true love.

The Polka Dot Dress

Baby clothes

Last week I did a big sale on Instagram, selling off some of Iris’ clothes that she just doesn’t fit into any more (insert waterfall of tears here). As I was going through bags of old clothes, I found one item that I knew I just couldn’t part with.

When I first found out I was pregnant back in early 2011, I bought two pieces of clothing. One for a boy and one for a girl. At that time I had no idea which one I’d need. I also apparently had no idea how to buy baby clothes. Despite the fact that this sweet polka dot number had a tag that read “3T”, I thought it was a perfect little baby dress.

As I rediscovered it this past weekend, I realized that now it was truly her size. The stars aligned because, despite it being an early February day, the weather was warm and sunny, so once again Iris wore the first “dress” that she ever owned.

And she’s owned a lot.

And for the record, Iris pulled off the boy outfit pretty well too.

1950s suspender set. so ridiculous.

BANGS!

I’ll admit.
I was more nervous than Iris was.
But I pulled the trigger and had my girl Taylor take her scissors to Iris’ front locks.
Now all I can think is, why the hell didn’t we do this sooner?

From Baby Room to Big Girl Room

Over the holiday break, there were a few days where I was off work and Iris’ school was open. When Iris was a baby, I never thought I would be the mom that would take her kid to school when I didn’t have to work.

Welllll… Things change.

I have since discovered that this option might be one of the BEST THINGS EVER.

It’s very rare that I get more than a few minutes of time to do whatever I want, completely uninterrupted. So, I decided to spend an entire one of my days cleaning out Iris’ room and play area to make space for all of her new Christmas goodies. I bagged up a bunch of her old toys – some to donate and some special ones to keep stored away. I took down some of the things that have been in her room since it was a nursery and subtly turned her room over from a baby room, to a big girl room. She’s been in a big bed since she turned two, but we took off the bumpers from her bed, put up ice cream cone decorations from her third birthday party, and added a few new pieces of art to the walls.

I packed away old blocks (that my dad made for me when I was a baby), Sophie the giraffe (she still squeaked him just to annoy me), and a vintage Fisher Price toy, along with pennant flags (both from my friend Kerri).

I may have cried just a little.

Here’s one with just Iris’ arts and crafts things.
Best decision I’ve ever made.

I got this print from Riffraff, one of our favorite local shops.
Whenever Iris is grumpy we sing “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” to her and she loves/hates it and us.
I think it’s pretty appropriate that it’s now above her while she sleeps becuause at three years old,
she’s grumpy…
a lot.

Even with this new room.

Getting Rid of the Pacifier

After Iris’ second birthday we decided that it was nearing time to get rid of her beloved pacifiers. We started talking to her about it in advance, warming her up to the idea.

Our approach? Lying.
It worked and I wouldn’t have done it any other way.

We told her that the baby animals needed them.
What baby animals? I’m not entirely sure…
Just some vague, very cute, baby animals.

Thankfully Iris was old enough to comprehend the idea, but young enough not to question it (phew!). It actually made her happy and proud to “mail” them away to those poor baby animals that never had any pacis to love.

Big day over here. Iris mailed all of her pacifiers to the baby animals.

Because we had talked it up for a few weeks, Iris was actually excited to collect each one, stuff them into a box, and walk the package out to the mailbox. She still has no concept of what mail actually is so we even saved money on a stamp! To her, all mail – even bills – are birthday party invitations. I think I’ll start pretending that’s true.

A couple of days later wouldn’t you know – the baby animals sent us an email with pictures of them enjoying the heck out of her old pacis! I had Todd photoshop Nuks (the only kind Iris would ever use) into the mouths of the cutest animals Google images had to offer and – voila! Iris was thrilled too see her pacis still being loved by a tiny monkey, elephant, bunny, etc.

Iris sent her pacifiers to baby animals

The next week wasn’t entirely smooth sailing. She woke up occasionally in the night, requiring us to go in and pat her back till she fell asleep (although, not too much different from when she would wake up, not being able to find her paci in the sheets). That was a month ago and we haven’t looked back. She accepted it from the start and never cried once for her paci. I feel like the hardest part is on the parents. It was so easy to plug her up when she was upset in public. I also knew what comfort it gave her, so taking that way made me feel a bit guilty. To me, she is still my little baby. Always will be. But now I can kiss that cute little baby mouth any time I want – without a silly Nuk in the way.

Feel free to use our idea (and our photos) if you want to try the same (lie) approach.
