December!

It’s the most wonderful time of yeeeear! And by wonderful, I mean busy as heck. This past week it seems like every minute has been accounted for with plans, but here’s what’s new with us:

+ We started using Blue Apron! We opted for the three meals per week plan (for two people) which is $60 per week. We just received our sixth box and overall we’ve been quite pleased – despite a few shipping hiccups. So far I’m a fan because there are two things I don’t like: meal planning and grocery shopping, and this elevates both of these things. Plus, we’re not picky eaters, but I’m also not an adventurous cook so it’s been fun to try things I normally would never think to make. I’ve been posting some of my adventures with Blue Apron on Snapchat (username: sarah-fortune), which shows my love, as well as my frustrations with the service (I may do a post soon about my full, unsponsored, experience and how to adjust for a kid-friendly portion).

+ We went to The Little Craft Show! I was lucky enough to go to the VIP function the night before opening day, where I snagged a goodie bag full of fun stuff. We went back on Saturday too, where we picked up another few gifts (and maybe some things for myself).

Now I just have to pull all my efforts into finishing my Christmas shopping, getting my long to-do list checked off at work before the holiday break, and then I’ll be good and ready for Christmas. PS – I’m posting a few gift ideas of things we love this week, so stay tuned.

Halloween 2015

This year for Halloween Iris was about 2,938 different things. Okay, maybe just four. I know, I know. That’s still about three too many, but I just couldn’t help myself. After weeks of deliberation, Iris chose what she wanted to be for trick-or-treating: a panda. At first I had great intentions of getting crafty and making her costume, but then life was all lifey and I had zero time to do so. I showed her some options on Amazon Prime and she chose her favorite one. Bam! Cute, fuzzy, WARM Panda Iris.

I feel like all of her costumes were somewhat justified, as Halloween seemed to last forever this year. On Friday, we had trick-or-treating on the Fayetteville town square. On Saturday (Halloween-proper), we trick-or-treated around our neighborhood. Then on Sunday, Iris’ Montessori school had their Fall Carnival. I also dressed her up in a couple things just for funsies.

Last year we dressed Iris up as a mini-Tom Petty, so this year I went the same route.

Iris as a mini Ryan Adams

And Iris as Iris Apfel. How could I not?!

On to her real costume…

At this point she had gotten bored with being a “regular panda” so she made herself into a “fancy panda.”

With another Halloween behind us, it’s time to start getting excited for Christmas! Okay, maybe not quite yet, but if I’m already listening to Christmas music in my car you will never know.

Iris’ CVS Birthday Party

About a month ago I asked Iris what kind of theme she wanted for her fourth birthday party… Frozen, Hello Kitty, Star Wars, etc. Her answer? CVS. Yes, as in the second largest pharmacy chain, just behind Walgreens. If you follow me on Instagram you are probably well aware of her love for the store. What you might not know is why the heck our kid loves it so much. Let’s take a look back, shall we?

Here’s a video of Iris literally in tears, crying for her favorite store.

Iris loves CVS. Like, really loves it.

It all started nearly two years ago when construction began on our city’s very first CVS Pharmacy. The site happens to be directly on our path to Iris’ school, so we drive past the location at least twice a day. Being that she was only three when it opened, she watched the progress of the structure being built for nearly half of her life, so naturally it was a big deal when the store finally opened. When Iris first got to step inside the brand new CVS, she was not disappointed. She discovered all the snacks, drinks, toys, chap-stick, and band-aids that her little heart could ever desire.

The store has been open for nearly a year now and stopping in to pick up a sweet treat or a strawberry milk is at least a weekly occurrence for us. There are tears when we drive by and don’t stop, and there are cheers when we do. This girl’s love for CVS is pure and true – so loyal that I recently asked Iris where she’d rather go – CVS or Disneyworld. Her response? “CVS and Disneyworld.” Don’t you dare make a girl choose.

So when your kid puts CVS on the same level as Disneyworld, you embrace it. When they ask for a CVS birthday party, you throw it. One day it won’t be so simple to make her happy, so for now I take her to CVS when we have a few extra minutes to spare and try my best to make her birthday party special, as tricky as it may be (after all, there are no Pinterest boards for this, folks).

But when CVS headquarters heard about Iris’ party, they sent us tons of snacks, favors, and party supplies to celebrate. How cool is that? And when we told the local store manager about what kind of party we were having, he was so sweet to donate some CVS-brand water bottles to add to the goodie bags. Not to mention that her year was MADE when they flashed a big “Happy Birthday” message to Iris up on the big sign out front.

To celebrate CVS style, we gathered at our favorite local park with some of our favorite people. Here are a few photos from our day.

Best thing ever.

Party time!

Gotta keep the adults entertained.

Don’t worry. These were Tic Tac favors for the grown-ups only!

Gold Emblem™ snacks (a CVS exclusive) sent directly from their headquarters!

Goodie bags!

A big thank you to all of our friends who celebrated and happily played along (apparently so many people bought her a birthday gift from our local CVS that all the employees knew about the party). And thank you to CVS who helped make Iris’ fourth birthday so special. By the way, this is in no way sponsored by CVS. Just 100% true love.

Sunday Scenes

70 degrees and sunny. What a perfect Sunday to spend with my girl. Todd spent a bit of the afternoon helping his dad pack some things in a moving van (they just bought a house on a river!), so Iris and I had much of the day to ourselves. We stayed in our pajamas until noon, ate bacon and biscuits, tidied up the house with the windows open, visited a nearby playground, had a little picnic in our backyard, changed outfits four times, and watched a little football (Iris opted for Team Umizoomi). And just like that, it’s time for the work week to begin again.

Here are some scenes from our day.

Only in September

When I was little and would whine about something not being fair, my dad would tell me, “The fair only comes in September.”

Well, it’s September and here are some photos to prove it.
