Baby Blog: The One-Year-Old Update

So I’m about six months behind on posting an update of what Iris has been up to. The last time I updated, she was just starting to walk on the day she turned nine months old. Now at nearly 15 months, Iris is a full-on toddler. She’s not just walking – she’s running, climbing on things, and learning new words daily. Below are some random things that I want to make sure to document so that I’ll never forget them.

Talking:
● Iris’ first legit word was “uh oh.” To this day, it’s still her favorite, most used word.
● She also knows a handful of people’s names. Right now she does: Dada, Mama, Bama (“bah bah”), Nana, Poppy (“pah pah”), and even tried Dustin a few times (“dus tahhh”).
● “Bah bah” also works for baby. “Mah” is more. “Tah” is cat. “Dah” is dog. “Buh buh” is bye bye. Her “Hi” is spot on. She’s to the stage now where she will try to repeat lots of different words. Her speaking skills are getting cuter by the day.
● At Montessori they use sign language. She signs mostly for more, please, and water.

Foods:
● We let her try nearly everything, but she’s definitely a picky eater. Her favorite thing ever is pasta & cheese (can you blame her?). She also loves fruit – primarily bananas & the Cutie oranges. I always do a little cheer when I discover a vegetable that she likes, but then it seems like the next day she hates it. Currently in: Lima beans & corn. Out: Peas & kale.
● As you can tell from her belly, she LOVES to eat. She will let you know when she’s ready to eat by going to her highchair and trying to climb in. Like every hour.

Fun:
● Iris likes to play outside, color and paint, go down the slide a million times, play peek-a-boo, and go “bye bye”.
● One of her favorite times of the day is when her daddy comes home from work. She squeals so loud he can hear it from outside.
● She’s still at the stage where she’s fascinated in the most average things around the house. This can be trouble when it’s a mug of the morning’s coffee and opening (and shutting) drawers on tiny fingers. We have to keep a close eye on her.
● Bath time is another favorite. She loves pouring water in and out of cups, but hates having her hair washed.
● Iris loves to laugh. It’s contagious too.

Facts:
● At a year, she wears mostly 18 month clothes, but a lot of 24 months & 2T things as well.
● She has started evening out and is in the 60% percentile for height & weight, but still 90% for her head.
● She’s in the 700% for hair. (hah). And no I still haven’t cut it yet.
● Iris still goes to bed early (about 7 or 7:30 each night) and often asks to go to bed by going to her crib, pointing, and saying “mah” for more.
● Iris recently had to go to the emergency room AGAIN because she had Croupe. It was pretty scary for about 36 hours, but thankfully she’s just fine now.
● Iris was early to do almost everything, except get teeth. She now has four on the top and four on the bottom. She even has a little gap between her top front ones. I don’t know what’s cuter – that or the dimple on her chin.

Quick Trip: Chicago

Ever since Iris has been here,
it seems like I’ve been on a travel hiatus.

This late summer though,
is a different story.

I used to love packing my bags, but now…
Saying goodbye to my love is tough.

I wanna bring her with me.

Recently I flew to Chicago
for a short business trip
(sans baby).

Baby Blog: Seven months old

Okay, even though Iris is nearing the eight month mark, I really wanted to do a seven month post because it seems like a lot is happening this month. Probably the most impressive thing is that Iris has… dun dun dun – started crawling!

For a few days all she would do is go from laying on her stomach, to pushing herself up into a sitting position. Every time she would try to crawl, she would just sit straight up instead. I thought that little trick would hinder her since she seemed so proud of it, but about a week ago she made her first trek across her bedroom floor. I admit, I used a cup of water to tempt her (she’s totally obsessed with the stuff). Over this past weekend she has perfected her crawl, meaning we are very busy parents over here. Of course she wants everything that she’s not supposed to have and our house is far from being baby proof. She’s dying to know what my flip flops taste like and she loves turning up the volume on our stereo to full blast. The sweetest thing ever though, was when Iris saw Todd come home from work and she eagerly crawled over to him, reaching out for his hand.

Annnnd we have a crawler.

Even more exciting than that, next week Iris is starting Montessori school! This is her last week at her current daycare, which is bittersweet, but we all can’t wait for her to make the switch (special thanks to my mom for making this happen). Her current daycare has been perfect for what we’ve needed it for so far. It’s right next to my work, which allowed me extra snuggles when she was oh-so-tiny. But after touring Montessori, we fell in love. The facilities offer so much, with tons of space, lots of outdoor time, and a healthy food menu for when she eats people food. But mostly, Montessori has a creative focus on learning (even at such an early age) that we think will be perfect for our growing girl.

Here are a few photos from the past month…
Now it seems that most of my photo taking is done through Instagram, but I keep trying to remind myself to break out the real camera. Here are a few moments I captured in our backyard and around the house. Enjoy!

The Working Mom & Breastfeeding

Iris Adella - The Birth

Okay, so this might not be a post for everyone, but I felt compelled to write it nonetheless.

As a full-time working mom, I knew I had an uphill battle to continue breastfeeding once my maternity leave was over. I was determined to keep going, even though Iris was in daycare while I was in the office. My goal was always to make it six months, and thanks to my accommodating workplace, I reached my goal. It was an interesting journey though – and not at all how I expected.

When Iris was about four weeks, I started pumping and storing a supply of frozen breastmilk. At one point our freezer was literally full, as I became obsessed with making sure she would have enough once she started daycare. Thanks to my healthy supply, she was exclusively breastfed until three months old and at the three month mark, she had her first taste of formula. I was hesitant to give it to her, but once she sucked the bottle dry, I instantly felt relief. Relief knowing that if something were to happen and I couldn’t continue breastfeeding, she would be okay. It took the pressure off, which actually helped with the stressful demand of breastfeeding my hungry girl. From there, we occasionally gave her a bottle of formula at night, so that hopefully it would “stick” with her longer (at this point she was still only sleeping about 2 hours at a time). Truthfully that didn’t help at all, but it was nice to have my husband take some of the feedings. I must add that having the husband take over didn’t mean I got any extra sleep. The key was to pump whenever she took a bottle so that my supply wouldn’t change. So even when Todd fed her, I still made myself wake up and pump.

During Iris’ first month of daycare, I continued to breastfeed at night and on weekends. However, when she was about four months old things started to change. My theory is that Iris got so used to the instant gratification of the bottled breastmilk during the day, that she was too impatient to feed from me at night. It became a struggle, not a comfort for her. I finally came to terms with the fact that it was okay if she preferred a bottle. I could still provide that for her.

The most important thing was that she was getting breastmilk
– not how she was getting it.

So there I was, nearing six months since giving birth and I was doing something that I never understood before I had a baby – not breastfeeding technically, but still pumping thanks to my Medela Pump In Style Advanced. When people asked if I was breastfeeding, I honestly didn’t know how to respond. When I would say yes, they often talked about the bonding experience. While I certainly had that for a while, a big part of that was gone. When I said no, they assumed she was formula fed only. And when I tried to explain, I would get confused “hey-I-didn’t-need-to-hear-all-of-that” looks.

Pumping had just about taken over my life. When I got close to the six month mark, I finally stopped pumping during the night, but I still lugged my equipment with me to work and out of town when I traveled. It was the last thing I did before I went to sleep and the first thing I did when I woke up. Thankfully, I have my own office (and understanding co-workers), so I could just shut my door during the day and do my thing. At home, if I wasn’t pumping, I was busy washing all the bottles and parts. It certainly was a lot of work and during most of it, I was missing my favorite part – the bonding time with my baby. However there were other perks too. It was much easier to measure how much she was eating, plus the price of formula alone was enough to inspire me to keep going.

So much crap required for a two hour stay at Grandma's.
My everyday haul.

While the journey wasn’t an easy one on me, I was grateful that my circumstances allowed me to continue longer than a lot of other moms are able. Some moms don’t have jobs with an environment to continue and some moms find that they can’t breastfeed at all. I felt that I shouldn’t waste my opportunity to give my baby the benefits of breastmilk simply because it took some work. Believe me, there were more days than not, that I just wanted to stop and have my life back. No more thinking about my coffee intake or timing it just right so that I could have a beer. On the other end of the spectrum, six months might not seem like a long time for some mothers. But for my personal situation I feel comfortable in knowing that six months is a happy medium for both working momma and healthy baby.

I must say, that this experience was truly one of my first big lessons of how motherhood doesn’t always go as planned.

One of many, I’m sure…

Oh, babe.

Baby Blog: 2 months old

Well, what do ya know.
I have a two month old on my hands!

Ms. Iris Adella…
● Is extra smiley in the morning, but not so much after naps.
● Has a bedtime routine which includes a bath (she’s quite the splasher) and story time (Night-Night Little Pookie is on repeat these days).
● Has been sleeping five hour stretches some nights.
● And has zombies for parents.
● While she’s been cooing a bit here and there, on her 8 week birthday she woke up a little chatterbox, making all sorts of sweet sounds.
● Miss Independent. Iris doesn’t always like being held. While she puts up with it, she makes it known that she’d rather be laying beside you rather than in your arms. It makes it a bit easier to do things around the house, but sometimes a momma just wants to cuddle.
● Her hair still hasn’t fallen out (I’m crossing my fingers that it’s here to stay). It’s growing fast and growing in lighter.
● She had her first Thanksgiving, in Tulsa with family.
● She didn’t care for tummy time until just this past Friday when she learned to roll over! She did it like six times in a row, so I was able to capture it on video.

Here are my Instagram photos from the last month or so…
