Baby Blog: Seven months old

Okay, even though Iris is nearing the eight month mark, I really wanted to do a seven month post because it seems like a lot is happening this month. Probably the most impressive thing is that Iris has… dun dun dun – started crawling!

For a few days all she would do is go from laying on her stomach, to pushing herself up into a sitting position. Every time she would try to crawl, she would just sit straight up instead. I thought that little trick would hinder her since she seemed so proud of it, but about a week ago she made her first trek across her bedroom floor. I admit, I used a cup of water to tempt her (she’s totally obsessed with the stuff). Over this past weekend she has perfected her crawl, meaning we are very busy parents over here. Of course she wants everything that she’s not supposed to have and our house is far from being baby proof. She’s dying to know what my flip flops taste like and she loves turning up the volume on our stereo to full blast. The sweetest thing ever though, was when Iris saw Todd come home from work and she eagerly crawled over to him, reaching out for his hand.

Annnnd we have a crawler.

Even more exciting than that, next week Iris is starting Montessori school! This is her last week at her current daycare, which is bittersweet, but we all can’t wait for her to make the switch (special thanks to my mom for making this happen). Her current daycare has been perfect for what we’ve needed it for so far. It’s right next to my work, which allowed me extra snuggles when she was oh-so-tiny. But after touring Montessori, we fell in love. The facilities offer so much, with tons of space, lots of outdoor time, and a healthy food menu for when she eats people food. But mostly, Montessori has a creative focus on learning (even at such an early age) that we think will be perfect for our growing girl.

Here are a few photos from the past month…
Now it seems that most of my photo taking is done through Instagram, but I keep trying to remind myself to break out the real camera. Here are a few moments I captured in our backyard and around the house. Enjoy!

Baby Blog: Afternoons with Iris

Afternoons with Iris are my most favorite parts of the day. Walking through her classroom door at daycare is the usual highlight because once she spots me across the room, she literally cracks up laughing. I’m told that she smiles and laughs all day long, but I’m sure she has her fussy moments too. Lately on the drive home I’ve been trying to teach her to say “ma ma”… but because I’m working so hard on it, it will probably be the last thing she ends up saying. We recently started giving her a third meal of solids in the early evening, along with some little snacks. She’s gotten so good with eating! She opens her mouth for every bite and gets very impatient if you don’t feed it to her fast enough. Once she’s eaten her dinner, we try to spend the rest of the evening outside if the weather is nice (lately it’s been amazing). Whether it’s on our front porch or on a blanket in the backyard, Iris loves rolling around, scooting backwards, babbling ,and trying to put everything she can in her mouth. She is damn determined to have a fist full of grass for dessert.

Baby Blog: 6 months old

Took the afternoon off to be with this. Can you blame me?

My oh my where does the time go?
(My theory is into Iris’ chunky thighs.)

Baby girl is getting bigger by the minute and now that she is officially six months old, I feel like she’s turning into a little girl, rather than my dreamy little baby.

Here a few things Iris has been up to lately.

+ Rolling and rolling everywhere she wants to go. She tries to crawl, but only manages to scoot a little backwards (pretty frustrating for her).
+ She throws her arm up and down to wave “hi”.
+ Iris is eating like a champ! Besides bottles, she eats a fruit with oatmeal in the morning, a veggie in the afternoon, and we’ve started introducing her to fun snacks too. I never knew watching a baby try to put a little puff to her mouth would be so entertaining.
+ She weighs 18.7 pounds and is 27 inches long (still in the 90+ percentile for everything).
+ The amount smiles and laughter that come out of this girl is unreal. She really is such a happy baby. Of course, we have our share of the grumps too.
+ At six months she FINALLY started sleeping through the night. She was still waking up one to three times a night to eat, but after reassurance from our doctor, we finally decided it was time for her to give up all nighttime feedings. Even though I was hesitant, we tried the Cry It Out Method (which actually involved a lot less crying than I anticipated). She now sleeps between 10 to 12 hours straight every night. Halle-frickin-lujah.
+ Iris had her first overnight at Grandma’s house. My mom watched her while Todd and I had our first night out in well over a year. Note that this was BEFORE she slept through the night. Sorry, Mom.
+ She’s at the age now where it’s fun and pretty easy to bring her places. She goes from silly Iris, to serious Iris taking in all the sights and sounds (very quiet and very observant).
+ Overall, she is so sweet and so much fun. All I ever want to do is hang out with her, so blogging has definitely taken a backseat (as you can see).

Baby Blog: 3 & 4 months old

Can you see how busy this baby has kept me? I haven’t blogged in nearly two months. That’s half of Iris’ life!

Little Miss is now a whopping 17 weeks old. I seriously can’t believe the changes that have taken place in the last couple of months. Everyday she gets stronger, bigger, sweeter, and even louder. At her three month check up she weighed 14 pounds, 7 ounces and, after consulting my bathroom scale, I have a sneaking suspicion she’ll be around 16 and a half pounds at her four month visit on Valentine’s Day. Iris has been “talking” up a storm quite a bit. It’s so loud that you can’t hear anything over it. I’m interested to see if that translates to a talkative kid. Todd and I were both very shy when we were younger, so it would be funny if we end up with a chatterbox on our hands.

Probably the biggest thing that has happened since my last blog post is that Iris started daycare. She seems to be handling it just fine – it was me that had the hardest time with it. In fact, they tell me almost every day how happy she always is. Thankfully, it’s just down the street from my office, so I usually check in on her on my lunch hour. It’s a “learning center” so they have already started working with her to improve things like her strength and hand-eye coordination. She really is growing up fast – she grabs toys and her toes, can put lots of pressure on her leggies, laughs quite a bit, and is getting closer to sitting up by herself. One of the best things that has happened in the last month is that we are now on a real schedule, which is mostly important for our sleep (and sanity). Iris now sleeps in her crib from 7 pm to 7 am, waking only twice to eat. Not too shabby!

I have tons of photos that I still need to edit from my digital camera, but for now, here are some of my favorite Instagram shots. (And I promise to update more often).

Big smile. Big hair.

Baby Blog: 2 months old

Well, what do ya know.
I have a two month old on my hands!

Ms. Iris Adella…
● Is extra smiley in the morning, but not so much after naps.
● Has a bedtime routine which includes a bath (she’s quite the splasher) and story time (Night-Night Little Pookie is on repeat these days).
● Has been sleeping five hour stretches some nights.
● And has zombies for parents.
● While she’s been cooing a bit here and there, on her 8 week birthday she woke up a little chatterbox, making all sorts of sweet sounds.
● Miss Independent. Iris doesn’t always like being held. While she puts up with it, she makes it known that she’d rather be laying beside you rather than in your arms. It makes it a bit easier to do things around the house, but sometimes a momma just wants to cuddle.
● Her hair still hasn’t fallen out (I’m crossing my fingers that it’s here to stay). It’s growing fast and growing in lighter.
● She had her first Thanksgiving, in Tulsa with family.
● She didn’t care for tummy time until just this past Friday when she learned to roll over! She did it like six times in a row, so I was able to capture it on video.

Here are my Instagram photos from the last month or so…
