One ordinary weeknight in January I got the call.
My dad said that he went in for a routine colonoscopy and, well… what they found wasn’t good. It didn’t really hit me when he first told me, but when it did – I cried my eyes out.
My dad cried too, which of course made me bawl even more.
He has cancer.
At first we didn’t know much, except that it seemed to be an aggressive form and that he would need surgery very soon. A couple weeks later he endured a seven and a half hour surgery to remove pretty much his entire colon. With that came an infection at his surgery incision and a herniated disc in his lower spine. Now he’s just begun six months of chemotherapy. All so fun, right?
If you know my dad, you know that he one of the the sweetest, kindest, funniest, most genuine people on the planet. I hate that someone so good is going through something so bad. He has the best attitude about it though and, of course, is joking about it all the way (he even signed an email “Love, Chemo Sabe”).
I also hate that I’m so far away, so I’m helping out however I can. I set up a Go Fund Me account and helped set up a Facebook page for an benefit concert that his buddies are putting together for him in Memphis.
